Ideas for Short Story Anthologies (5 posts)

    So this is an idea that’s been kicking in my head for awhile: Readers love free books on Amazon, and it’s a great way to introduce a reader to your work as an author + it’s a good way to kind of hone the craft a bit and work towards bigger stuff.

    I’d love to put together some anthology projects with multiple authors writing “themed stories”. After every story, there’d be a short (1-page-ish) author bio, with a link to their blog or where the reader can purchase the authors’ work or otherwise consume their writings further (nom nom nom).

    I think this would be a fairly easy project, although it’d have to be timed (mini NaNo?) so that the anthology wouldn’t be delayed too much by Real Life drama. I’d be willing to put in the time to format the anthology as editor and put it up on B&N and Amazon — I’m pretty slick with Sigil at this point.

    So… topics? Here’s a few anthologies I’ve thought of.

    * And Then John Was A Zombie — Zombie short stories, preferably with a bad/sad ending?
    * Once Upon A Time — Short one-offs of fairy tales and reinterpretations?
    * Under the Sea — Exploratory fiction under the sea. Mermaids optional?
    * 1985 — Play on Orwell’s 1984, fiction on totalitarian regimes?
    * Ghost Lights — Ghost stories, and other paranormal scariness?

    Thoughts?

    I vote for zombies. RawR. And ghosts. (Though all the topics sound pretty nifty.)

    EDIT: Forgot to add, let’s not forget about dystopian. Oh, but it needs a cute theme name, huh? The Day Life as We Knew It Went Bu-Bye?

    “Changed Worlds”? “After The End”? “Happiness is Mandatory”?

    Oh, almost forgot — someone on my blog suggested a series of stories that looked at a D&D style world where our own political system had been implemented.

    Thread here, about half-way down the page: http://www.anamardoll.com/2011/09/narnia-clean-and-tidy-poor.html

    “Elections in the Era of Elusive Evil” was suggested. :P

    Happiness is Mandatory. Definitely. :D

    (I need to get all caught up on my blog reading. So far behind.)
